How to Search Bowie Bankruptcy Records
You have three main ways to find bankruptcy records for Bowie cases: PACER online, the VCIS phone line, or an in-person visit to the Greenbelt courthouse. Each method gives you access to the same federal records. The best choice depends on how much detail you need and how fast you need it.
PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) is the main online system for federal bankruptcy records. Go to pacer.uscourts.gov to set up an account. Once you log in, select the District of Maryland and search by debtor name, case number, or Social Security number. PACER charges $0.10 per page, but the cost per document is capped at $3.00. If your total PACER charges stay under $30 in a quarter, the court waives the fees entirely. For most one-time searches, you will owe nothing. PACER gives you access to petitions, schedules of assets and debts, creditor lists, meeting notices, discharge orders, and all other case documents.
The Voice Case Information System (VCIS) gives basic case info by phone. Call 1-866-222-8029. It is free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You need the debtor's name or case number to search. VCIS tells you the case status, filing date, chapter type, trustee name, and the date of the 341 creditors meeting. It does not give you document images, but it is a fast way to check on a case without logging into PACER.
For in-person access, visit the Greenbelt courthouse at 6500 Cherrywood Lane. Public terminals inside the courthouse let you search PACER for free. Printed copies from the clerk cost $0.50 per page. Certified copies are $5.00 plus $0.50 per page. SmartScan document retrieval costs $11.00 to retrieve a file, plus $9.90 for the first 30 pages and $0.65 per additional page, with a 100-page maximum per order.
To search, you will generally need:
- Full legal name of the debtor (individual or business)
- Approximate filing year or date range
- Case number if you have it
The court's filing fee schedule covers Chapter 7, Chapter 13, and Chapter 11 cases filed from Bowie and all of Prince George's County.
What Bowie Bankruptcy Records Contain
Bankruptcy records for Bowie residents are public federal court documents. They cover the full life of the case from first filing to final discharge or dismissal. The records show a detailed picture of the debtor's financial situation at the time of filing.
A typical bankruptcy file from Bowie will include the original petition, which lists the debtor's name, address, and the chapter they filed under. You will also find schedules that list all assets, all debts, monthly income, and monthly expenses. The statement of financial affairs covers recent transactions, payments to creditors, and other financial activity in the years before filing. The creditor matrix lists every person or company the debtor owes money to, with their addresses.
Chapter 7 files include the trustee's report on whether there are assets to sell for creditors. Most Chapter 7 cases in Bowie are no-asset cases, which means unsecured debts get discharged with no payments to creditors. Chapter 13 files include the repayment plan, which shows how the debtor plans to pay back some or all debts over three to five years. Both chapter types include the discharge order when the case ends, which is often the most important document for creditors and future lenders to see.
Bankruptcy Filing Fees for Bowie Residents
Federal filing fees apply the same way across all of Maryland. Bowie residents pay the same fees as anyone else in the Greenbelt Division. Fees are set by the federal courts and do not change by county or city.
- Chapter 7 (liquidation): $338
- Chapter 13 (repayment plan): $313
- Chapter 11 (business reorganization): $1,738
The court does allow fee installments for individuals. You can ask to pay the Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 fee in up to four payments. The last payment must come in before the court grants the discharge. You can also ask for a full fee waiver for Chapter 7 if your income is below 150% of the federal poverty line and paying the fee would cause hardship. The court grants these on a case-by-case basis. Remember that the Greenbelt Division is cashless since December 10, 2025, so bring a card or use pay.gov.
